18U Team at Southpointe for 2020-21 Season

For the 2020-21 Season, the Southpointe Rink Rats organization will field an 18U team that is expected to compete at the AA level.  The head coach for the team will be Don Dabkowski, who most recently was the head coach for the Southpointe 16U AA team, with assistance from Cliff Loya from National Elite, as described below.   There will be some unique aspects for this team, as summarized by the following key points:

  • The roster will be comprised of those birth years eligible for 18U.
  • The tryout will be open to anyone wanting to try-out that is eligible to play at 18U.
  • The team will play 18U in PAHL at a level as determined by the PAHL placement process. Based on past history, it is expected that this will be at the AA level.
  • The team will look to play in tournaments, alternating between local and travel.
  • For any travel tournaments, the team will look to play in higher level 18U tournaments (Warrior, Belle Tire, Nations Cup, Can-AM, etc.)
  • There will be an incremental fee of approximately $350 per player, in addition to the Southpointe fees, in order to bring in professional coaching consultation. This professional assistance will be provided by Cliff Loya from National Elite Hockey.   Cliff will provide the following over the course of the season:
    • Lead 20 practices over the course of the season, aligned with the team’s number of ice slots per month, that focus on a combination of skill development and implementation of team systems/plays/structure.
    • Lead 8 team meeting/whiteboard sessions over the course of the season, before specific practice slots, to review with the team the system/plays/structure that will be implemented.
    • Serve as an assistant coach on the bench for a certain number of games/scrimmages over the course of the season to identify opportunities for improvement in both the players and the team as a whole, which will then be used to develop practice plans and team sessions.
