Our 2020-2021 Coaches


19U Girls -- Steve Anthos.

Head Coach Steve Anthos has been coaching at SAHA since 2006.  He has coached every level of amateur hockey, from mites through midget.  Mr. Anthos served on the Board of Directors at Southpointe and South Fayette hockey and has been the head coach of the SAHA 19U Girls' team for 6 seasons.  The SAHA 19U Girls won both the regular season and playoff PAHL banners in 2018-19 and the regular season banner in 2019-20.

 

18U AA -- Don Dabkowski.

Head Coach Don Dabokwski's coaching career began in the 2008-2009 season when he served as an assistant coach at the Mite B level for Southpointe, with both of his sons playing on that team. Since then, he has been a head coach for 8 SAHA teams and an assistant coach for 9 SAHA teams.  During this tenure, he has coached teams across all age levels, from mites to bantams, and across all skill levels, from B to AA. Most recently, Don served as the head coach for the Southpointe Midget 16U AA team. In addition, Don is an active coach within the Peters Township hockey program, serving as the head coach for various Junior Indians and Middle School teams, and most recently as an assistant coach for the JV 2 team in the 2017-18 season.

 

16U -- John Sloane.

Head Coach John Sloane has been coaching at Southpointe for the past 8 years.  He is a Level 4 certified coach with additional training in off ice conditioning and goaltending.  In addition to coaching for the Rink Rats, John has coached for Peters Township hockey and is a current coach for the Canon Mac hockey team.  John has degrees in Child Psychology and was an All American athlete.

 

14U Bantam 2006 AA -- Joe Thomas.

Head Coach Joe Thomas has six seasons of coaching experience between PIHL and PAHL. Mr. Thomas coached at the Bishop Canevin middle school (assistant and head coach) and varsity (assistant coach) levels.  He has two seasons of PAHL head coaching experience, including one season at the 16U A Major level (Rink Rats) and one season at the 14U A Major level (SHAHA). The 14U A Major team played a successful AA tournament schedule outside of our PAHL regular season.  Mr. Thomas playing experience includes the Arctic Foxes and Bishop Canevin Varsity.

Assistant Coach DJ Zeh.  Mr. Zeh's coaching experience includes:  SHAHA 14U A Major Assistant Coach, Rink Rats 16U A Major Assistant Coach, Bishop Canevin Middle School Assistant Coach, and  Bishop Canevin Varsity Assistant Coach.  DJ's playing experience includes the Southpointe Rink Rats, Pittsburgh Predators AA, Bishop Canevin Varsity, and the University of Pittsburgh ACHA D1.

Assistant Coach Shane Donnelly.   Mr. Donnelly's coach experience includes: SHAHA 14U A Major Assistant Coach and Rink Rats 16U A Major Assistant Coach.  Shane's playing experience includes the Viper Stars AAA, Knoch Varsity, and Duquesne University ACHA D1.

 

14U Bantam 2007 AA -- Tanner Orr.
Coach Orr has been playing competitive hockey for 13 years.  He started his youth travel hockey career at SHAHA on a 12U B major team and ended by playing at SHAHA on an 18U AA team.  He then moved from SHAHA to the Esmark Stars at the AAA level as a Midget major.  He played his high school career on the South Park Varsity team during his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years.  During his junior year he was named Captain.  This year he is ending his college career on the Robert Morris University D1 Club.  He started playing at RMU as a true freshman and was named Captain for the RMU D1 Club team for two years.  In addition to his playing career, Coach Orr has been coaching for a number of years.  He has been a Skills Coach for National Elite for four years, an Assistant Coach for the National Elite Spring Program for four years (a total of eight teams) and a Head Coach for the National Elite Spring Program for three years (a total of five teams).  He has also been a Next Step Skills Coach for two years.  Finally, over this past year, he has been a coach for the Tyler Kennedy Training program and an Assistant Coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Black ’07 team.

 

12U Peewee -- Rob Hammel.

Rob Hammel is entering his 3rd year of coaching at Rink Rats, second as a head coach.  Coach Hammel grew up playing youth hockey in Pittsburgh and moved to Connecticut to play high school.  In the summers, he played for Team Mid-Am at USA Hockey's Select 15, 16 & 17 Festivals, tryout for USNTDP.  After high school, Coach Hammel signed a tender with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and played Tier 1 Junior ‘A’ in 2000-2001.  Coach Hammel then played 4 years of NCAA Div. I for the Quinnipiac University Bobcats from 2002 – 2005, winning 1 conference title and playing in the 2002 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey tournament.

 

10U AA.

Head Coach: Sean Coyle

Sean Coyle has been named as the head coach of the 2020-21 Southpointe Squirt AA team after a successful 2019-20
campaign. This will be Sean’s 6th year coaching squirts at Southpointe, and his 9 th season coaching He is a USA Hockey
level 4 certified coach. His coaching resume includes Mites to Bantam AA. He has assisted in getting many kids to both
the AA level and the Tier 1 AAA level. Sean also served as Southpointe’s Mite Coordinator for 2 seasons, with
responsibilities for developing practice plans for all Mite Teams.

Sean played amateur hockey in the Pittsburgh area, including playing for the perennial champion Bishop Canevin
Crusaders of the PIHL. He is currently as Southpointe board member and serves as VP/Director of coaching. He is a
licensed physical therapist and brings his knowledge of kinesiology and sports training to the teams off ice program.

Assistant Coach: Matt Harmon

Matt Harmon has been named as an Assistant Coach for the 2020-21 Squirt AA Team supporting Sean Coyle. This
upcoming season with Squirt AA will mark the 9 th team that Matt has coached as either a Head Coach or Assistant Coach
with multiple youth programs. Matt has overseen or assisted in the development of players making significant year to
year progress, from Blue to Red Mite, and from Red Mite to Squirt 1 with multiple players. Matt has had the benefit of
working with and having great relationships with some of the area’s premier High School, Collegiate, and Tier 1 Coaches,
and enters the 2020-2021 Season as a USA Hockey registered Level 4 Coach.

Matt grew up playing amateur hockey in Pittsburgh, where he then went on to play D1 hockey at Duquesne University.
In addition to his coaching qualifications, Matt is a USA Hockey Level 4 Ice Hockey Official and officiates ice hockey in the
NCAA. Matt was also honored to be selected to officiate the 2019-2020 USA Hockey National Championships.

10U 2011 Birth Year -- Tim Creahan

Tim Creahan is entering his 3rd year of coaching with the Rink Rats. The last two years he served as an assistant coach at the Mite level for Southpointe. Most recently, Tim served as an assistant coach for the Rink Rat's Red Mite team. In addition, Tim is an active coach within the South Fayette Township hockey program, serving as an assistant coach for both the Lions mite and squirt teams.  Coach Creahan has been a head coach for a number of soccer teams in the South Fayette Soccer Association, and been an assistant coach on various baseball teams within the SFBSA teams for both his son and daughter.

Tim grew up in Buffalo, NY and played amateur hockey for the Amherst Knights. Tim still enjoys playing hockey now, and his passion is coaching his kids!

 

10U Squirt --  Rob Danzuso

This coming season will be Coach Danzuso's 8th year with the Rink Rats.  He has been a coach at every level from Mites (8U) to Bantams (14U), most recently as a Head Coach at the Bantam level and an Assistant Coach at the Mite level.  During that time, Mr. Danzuzo was also one of the organization's Mite Coordinators.  Coach Danzuso is a Level 3 Certified USA Hockey Coach, including Goaltending Certification.

Growing up, Rob played for Central Pittsburgh and Eastern (now Steel City). Coach Danzuso keeps active by playing on several adult hockey teams.

10U Squirt -- Loren Martello.
Head Coach Loren Martello began coaching at a young age. While still in college at California University of PA, he was an assistant coach for Southpointe's first ever girls hockey teams from 97-99 when his sister was playing on the squad and went undefeated in the regular season and were playoff champs in 1998. After a long layoff he returned to coaching two years ago as his children took up the sport.  Coach Martello coached Squirts and Pee Wee's the last two years and will also be an assistant Bantam coach this season.  Loren is a Level 4 Coach and loves to introduce new players to the game. Loren's playing career has included playing for the Mon Valley Thunder, Ringgold Varsity, and Club Hockey for California University of PA.  Coach Martello still plays today in the adult league at Southpointe.
